If you haven’t filed your 2018 return yet, you’ll need to put $0 for your 2020 AGI when filing online, according to National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins.
“You may file electronically and avoid filing a paper return,” she stated. “We must inform taxpayers.”
To prevent delays, the agency invites everyone to file electronically using direct deposit.
According to the IRS, about 94.3% of individual tax returns were filed electronically in 2020.
Nonfilers, who often include Social Security recipients or those earning less than the standard deductions, receive similar instructions.

If you received a CP80 notice for a 2020 return, your return may be pending.
If you received this warning and it hasn’t been acknowledged, Lucas advises entering $0 for your 2020 AGI.
“Their system will indicate $0, so I would start there,” he said.
If the IRS rejects your return with a $0 AGI for 2020, they may have processed last year’s return after delivering the warning, Lucas said.
While calling the IRS may be cumbersome, you can obtain a free IRS transcript from your online account.
