SNAP Schedule: Benefits of the West Virginia Mountain State Card for May 2022

The Mountain State Card, the state’s version of the EBT card, distributes monthly benefits to eligible low-income households through the West Virginia Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, or DHHR, administers SNAP in the state.

The West Virginia Mountain State Card functions similarly to a credit or debit card, allowing SNAP recipients to buy eligible food items at any participating store or farmers’ market. Food for human consumption and seeds/plants for food production are suitable. Household items, grooming products, tobacco, alcohol, pet food, and hot prepared foods ready to eat are not qualified for SNAP benefits.

Cash recipients can use their SNAP benefits to buy groceries and cashback (or withdraw money from a “Quest” ATM). Each month, the first three withdrawals are free. A $1 fee is deducted from your WV WORKS account for each additional cash withdrawal. Using ATMs may also incur bank surcharges.

After all deductions, benefit amounts are determined by household size and countable income.

Families with an elderly or disabled member are usually given special consideration. More “excess shelter/utility costs” and medical expenses exceeding $35 per month can be deducted in these cases. West Virginia has a higher asset limit and no gross income test in such cases.

For the first nine days of each month, benefits are distributed based on the first letter of your last name. Every month, on the first calendar day, cash benefits are distributed. Your Mountain State Card benefit deposits will be made in May.
