Taiwan Faces a’significant New Threat’ From China’s High-tech Jets.! Latest News! Viral News!

China’s deployment of J-16D fighter jets into Taiwan’s air defence zone this week marks the first glimpse of the new high-tech fighters, Taipei acknowledged Tuesday, with their electronic jamming capability posing a new threat to the island.

Taiwan is constantly threatened with invasion by China, which views the self-ruled, democratic island as an extension of its territory to be regained – by force if necessary.

The final quarter of 2021 saw a dramatic increase in Chinese intrusions into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ), with the peak being on October 4, when 56 aeroplanes entered the zone.

Sunday and Monday saw another stunning display of power, with 52 warplanes flying into the zone over the two days, according to the island’s defence ministry.

Among the 13 aircraft spotted on Monday were two J-16D fighter jets, which the ministry confirmed to AFP on Tuesday was the first time the high-tech fighters had been seen in combat.

The new jets were first displayed in September at a Chinese airshow, according to the Chinese state-run media outlet Global Times.

The J-16D is equipped with four jamming pods, two electronic warfare pods, and two missiles concealed beneath the jet’s belly, the company says.

“It is capable of disrupting radar to suppress and harm the adversary’s aerial defence capabilities,” Shu Hsiao-Huang, an analyst at Taiwan’s Institute for National Defense and Security Research, told AFP.

These radar-jamming capabilities, he continued, might “clear the way for subsequent attacks.”

“It represents a significant new threat to Taiwan’s air defence system.”

The Global Times issued a sabre-rattling editorial Tuesday, describing the J-16D fighters’ presence as a “self-evident” statement.

“PLA (People’s Liberation Army) warplanes would not only circle Taiwan, but they may also even fly over the island sooner or later,” the editorial said.

The two-day spate of invasions followed the US and Japan conducting naval drills in the Philippine Sea last week, an area that includes waterways east of Taiwan.

Taiwan began routinely disclosing data on air intrusions in September 2020.

October remained the busiest month on record, with 196 incursions into the defence zone, which stretches well beyond Taiwan’s sovereign airspace and overlaps with portions of China’s ADIZ.

Sunday’s 39 incursions – the majority of which were J-16 fighters – equalled with October 2 for the second-highest number ever recorded in a single day.

Beijing has increased pressure on Taiwan since Tsai Ing-wen was elected president in 2016 since she views the island as an independent republic separate from “one China.”

According to a database produced by AFP, Taiwan registered 969 incursions by Chinese jets last year – more than quadruple the roughly 380 carried out in 2020.
